12/5/2024 (Permalink)

A flooded basement can cause significant damage to your home and belongings. Whether it's due to heavy rainfall, a faulty sump pump, or a broken pipe, swift action is crucial to minimize the impact.

Common Causes of Basement Flooding:

  • Heavy Rainfall: Excessive rainfall can overwhelm your home's drainage system, leading to basement flooding.
  • Faulty Sump Pump: A malfunctioning sump pump can fail to remove water from your basement, resulting in flooding.
  • Sewer Backup: Issues with the municipal sewer system or your home's plumbing can cause sewage to back up into your basement.
  • Foundation Issues: Cracks in your foundation can allow water to seep into your basement.

The Dangers of Basement Flooding

  • Structural Damage: Prolonged exposure to water can weaken your home's foundation and walls.
  • Mold Growth: Water damage creates ideal conditions for mold growth, which can lead to health problems.
  • Electrical Hazards: Water and electricity are a dangerous combination. Always turn off power to affected areas before attempting any cleanup.

Smoke and Soot Cleanup Fire

8/16/2023 (Permalink)

Smoke and soot is extremely invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Elgin/NW Kane County will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures are then based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

How to Handle the Aftermath of a Sump Pump Failure in Elgin

6/29/2022 (Permalink)

It's that time of year where rain is usually in the forcast, so many Elgin homeowners are ensuring their sump pump is ready for the season. A sump pump is installed underneath the floor of basements which is called a “sump pit”. Once heavy rains hit your home, water starts to flow into the pit through drains or natural soil migration. Once watered is received, the pump will activate and start redirecting the water away from your home. It can be an especially important piece to your home if you invested money into refinishing the basement or have valuable items stored away. But like any piece of equipment, there is a possibility of it failing which can result in flooding, water backups, or water damage to your Elgin basement.

Your beautiful basement has flooded due to a sump pump failure, so now what?

  • A flooded basement poses an electrocution hazard. Never enter a wet or flooded basement until the electricity has been shut off from the main panel.
  • Locate and turn off the water source. If the source is coming from a ruptured pipe, turn off the main shutoff valve.
  • Determine the type of water that has flooded your Elgin home. If it from a pipe, it’s generally safe up to 48 hours, but it is still recommended to wear gloves, boots, and other protective gear. If the water is from a sewage backup, it is classified as biohazard and requires intervention by qualified experts.
  • Don’t attempt to pump it out yourself. If deep water is pumped from a flooded basement too quickly, you might cause structural failure. This is possible because there is external pressure exerted by over-saturated soil pressing against the basement walls.
  • Call the experts. SERVPRO of Elgin is your water mitigation experts. Our franchise has been servicing basements with water damage since 2003. We can confidently provide you with quality solutions to bring your Elgin home back to preloss conditions.

Luckily, there are a couple of ways you can avoid sump pump failures. The first way to avoid failure is through annual maintenance. For example, clear the sump pump basin of debris which can clog the pump inlet. Be sure to also test the function of float switches. You can do this by pouring five gallons of water into the basin and observing proper activation. Lastly, you can help prevent failure is to upgrade to a battery backup feature. This ensures the sump pump continues to work after your Elgin home experiences a power outage.
