Insulation and deodorization
The fire occurs in your living room and the restoration guys ask to get up into the attic? What is that all about?!
Smoke and soot rise with the heat and what is above the living room? Exactly, your attic.
This is a sometimes overlooked area of fire damage remediation; attics and the insulation in the attic. The insulation in many homes today is blown in cellulosic (meaning paper) insulation. This is a great product for maintaining the heat within your home. Unfortunately it absorbs odors as well.
In this job, the blown in insulation was removed with a large insulation vacuum to get all of the smelly insulation out of the attic. Then the wood was cleaned to remove all of the soot. Then the wood is encapsulated (painted) with a product that will lock in any remaining odors. This way your home wont smell like a campfire when the heat of summer heats up that attic space!!
