Dangerous cold temps can cause damage

When the outside temp drops to below zero, but the inside thermometer says its 65 degrees, what's the problem? When the outside temps are extremely cold, and the winds are really blowing, small openings in the outside siding can allow damaging winds inside the walls and ceilings are that can cause pipes to break.

This picture shows that the inside temp within this cabinet dropped to below freezing and the ice in the pipe actually pushed the water valve off the pipe!! This was in an upstairs bathroom and the resulting damage affected the upstairs, main level and the basement.

If temps are really cold outside, check the temp of the inside of cabinets with a basic thermometer. If the temps are really low, say 30's or 40's, leave the cabinet doors open and consider letting the faucet drip until the outside temps get up to the freezing point. Its better to have a slightly higher water bill than to have 10's of thousands of dollars in damage.
